Dan Henderson – MMA Legend
Dan Henderson is one of the living legends of MMA. Hendo is a former greco-roman Olympic wrestler and currently ranked #6 light heavyweight MMA fighter by Sherdog.
The American has 42 fights, winning 30 (14 by KO/TKO). What is more impressive is the fact that Dan Henderson was knocked out only once (by Vitor Belfort with a head kick in 2013). But let’s not forget Hendo was 43 years old when was firstly knocked out by Vitor Belfort! Amazing isn’t it? Moreover, Henderson was submitted in only 4 matches, which demonstrates his ability to avoid being surprised by any MMA fighter. Furthermore, those 4 losses by submission were recorded against top jiu-jitsu fighters like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Anderson Silva and Daniel Cormier. Dan has an impressive record 7-6 in UFC, 13-5 in Pride and 3-1 in Strikeforce.
Despite having a wrestling background, the 43 years old American has a deadly right hand. Out of his 30 wins, only two were by submission. Those two victories by submission were recorded in the early days of his career, against Eric Smith (guillotine choke) in 1997 and against Bakouri Gogitidze (with a knee in the ribs, which is not quite a traditional submission hold) in 1999. Since then, Hendo developed a devastating boxing style. His boxing prowess was demonstrated against Renzo Gracie. Dan Henderson is the only fighter that ever knocked out Renzo Gracie.
Dan Henderson started wrestling at the age of 5. Dan was part of USA Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team in 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. Henderson debuted in mixed martial arts tournaments in 1997, following the invitation of his friend Randy Couture. Hendo started his MMA career in Brazilian Open in 1997. Dan won UFC 17 next year, defeating the legendary Carlos Newton in the final. The American continued his winning streak with a victory in Rings – King of the Kings tournament, after defeating important names like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Renato Sobral. Dan Henderson decided to move further in his career and enter Pride, fighting mainly in middleweight division. Hendo is the first MMA fighter to hold two titles simultaneously (Pride Middleweight and Welterweight Champion). In his Pride stint, Hendo defeated important fighters like Renzo Gracie, Wanderlei Silva, Murilo Rua, Murilo Bustamente, Vitor Belfort or Kazuo Misaki.
Henderson’s return in UFC was not as successful as the the first stint. Dan Henderson was defeated by two MMA finest: Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva. Hendo recorded several wins in UFC before deciding to try his luck in Strikeforce. The American amazed everyone after he knocked out Renato Sobral (in a rematch) and Fedor Emelianenko (with devastating punches in the first round).
Hendo returned to UFC and won an epic match against Shogun Rua. Unfortunately, in 4 out his last 5 matches Dan Henderson was defeated and seemed to have lost edge and too old. The American only managed to win a rematch with Mauricio Rua, but Hendo is far from the form that made him a MMA icon.
is one of the finest mixed martial arts fighters in history, having the best resume when it comes to fighting world-class opposition. Hendo defeated MMA legends like Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Carlos Newton, Renzo Gracie and Rodrigo Sobral. Moreover he fought against 10 current or former UFC champions (among which Anderson Spider Silva, Quinton Rampage Jackson, Vitor Belfort, Mauricio Rua, Rick Franklin and Murilo Bustamente). The American is renowned for his mental ability to sustain long lasting battles and tremendous knock-out power in both hands.
