World Cup Golden Boot 2014: Possible Winners
Let’s see today which are the best strikers that are likely winners of World Cup Golden Boot. I have prepared a list of most prolific strikers in the last season and group games, strikers that are clearly favorites for winning World Cup Golden Boot.
1. Lionel Messi
The Argentinian is clearly a favorite, despite having a modest season and it is a known fact that he does perform well for the national team. However, Messi is decided to help Argentina win World Cup and add another trophy on his list. Moreover, Argentina was handed an easy group – Iran, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina – and Lionel Messi can win World Cup Golden Boot with his goals in the group stage against teams that are completely inferior.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
The eternal rival of Lionel Messi, is one likely contender for World Cup Golden Boot after his astonishing performance in UEFA Champions League (17 goals) and he shared European Golden Boot with Luis Suarez, 31 goals. It is very important whether his teammates will create enough chances for him to score, because no doubt Cristiano is one of the most efficient strikers in the world. Moreover, Ronaldo scored 8 goals in 10 matches for Portugal in 2014 World Cup qualifying. However, Portugal was handed in a tough group against Germany, Ghana and USA and it is debatable whether he will score enough goals in the group stage, in order to have real chances for winning World Cup Golden Boot.
3. Luis Suarez
Barclays Premier League top scorer established himself as one of the most lethal strikers in the world. What is more impressive was that Luis Suarez was suspended for the first 5 season games, the Uruguayan scored 31 goals. Uruguay was also handed in a very tough group against Italy and England, but Suarez proved that he can score against any opponent. If Uruguay manages to pass group stage, then Suarez will be a real contender for World Cup Golden Boot.
4. Sergio Aguero
Kun Aguero was one of the most efficient strikers in the last season, scoring 17 goals in 23 matches, averaging a goal every 75.8 minutes. However, his season was troubled by injuries. Aguero seems to partner up very well with Messi, who always requests his transfer to Barcelona. Sergio Aguero already scored 21 goals for Argentina, being the 8th all time goalscorer of the Pumas, alongside Gonzalo Higuain.
5. Robin Van Persie
Van Persie scored 11 goals in 2014 World Cup qualifiers. The Flying Dutch was injury prone during the last season, but he showed his class when he was fit. Van Persie is one of the most efficient strikers in the world, but he is handed in a tough group against Spain, and it not likely that those matches will generate too many goals.
6. Thomas Muller
The former World Cup Golden Boot winner, it is the perfect replacement for Miroslav Klose. Muller, 24 years old, is definitely on of the best attacking midfielder in the world. Even though he is not a pure striker, playing in the midfield, Thomas is a specialist of scoring from the midfield. With Mario Gomez uncapped, the ex World Cup Best Young Player will be responsible with the attacking charges of the Panzers.
Brazil’s hopes for a new World Cup title are related to Neymar’s ability to score. Teaming up with cultured striker Fred, who is not very spectacular, but efficient, Neymar always impressed for Selecao. The gifted Barcelona striker might easily win World Cup Golden Boot because the host country is in a easy group, against Croatia, Cameroon and Mexico. With a few goals in the group stage and a few more in the final stages, Neymar might bring the World Cup for Selecao and might finish the top goalscorer.
There are some other players that might be considered candidates for World Cup Golden Boot prize like Diego Costa (however he played only 2 friendlies for Spain and seem that he needs time to gel in with his teammates), Daniel Sturridge (interesting to see how he performs without Luis Suarez), Fred, Edison Cavani (his move to PSG seemed to affect his performances) and Gonzalo Higuain.
It is gonna be a very interesting battle for World Cup Golden Boot award!
